3 Keys To Successful Transitions

In the last few weeks, I've been bombarded with information about how our thinking is what determines the direction of our lives.  So here's one more E-zine about how important it is for us to aware of what's going on in our head – especially when we're transitioning into some uncharted waters in life.

Here are 3 things to remember when you're moving in a new direction:

1. Detach yourself from the outcome.  Don't pressure yourself.  Don't put yourself in a position where what you're trying to do MUST work out for you.  Resist the urge to make your new venture a "win or lose", "all or nothing", "life or death" proposition.  Remember that life is a marathon not a sprint.  In 10 years it probably won't matter if you succeeded at this one particular thing or not. What will matter is how you handled the challenge, regardless of the outcome.

2. Don't wait for confidence. There's a saying that "Confidence follows mastery, it does not precede it."  If you wait until you are confident to start something, you never will.  The first few times we try anything, we tend to be unsure of ourselves, taking tentative steps and hoping nothing goes wrong.  But if we're doing something new, things will go wrong, we will make mistakes.  It's how we learn, and it's ok.  Be willing to plunge in and learn by doing.  Trust that you'll build your confidence along the way.

3. Commit yourself.  It's much more difficult to move ahead in a new direction if you're not fully committed.  When you give a half-hearted effort, you'll get a half-hearted result.  That might make it tempting to absolve yourself of all responsibility by saying  "I tried it, and it didn't work."  All that does is reinforce the gremlin's voice in your head that continually whispers in your ear "You can't do it!"

Here's a great piece on commitment that reinforces just how important it is.

COMMITMENT By W. H. Murray in
The Scottish Himalaya Expedition, 1951

Until you make a clear commitment there is a hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.

Concerning all creative action, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans.

The moment you definitely commit yourself, then Providence moves too.

All sorts of things occur to help you that would never have otherwise occurred.

A whole stream of things takes place, such as unforeseen happenings or meeting certain people or being provided material assistance which you never dreamt would come your way.

I have learned a great respect for Goethe's couplets.

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."

~~W. H. Murray in the Scottish Himalaya Expedition, 1951

~~Weekly Challenge~~

Think about some new challenge in your life that you want to start. It doesn't have to be huge -- any new direction you're considering will work.

Use the 3 keys above to help you when you feel stuck or overwhelmed about continuing.

If you feel like throwing in the towel, contact me first.  Take advantage of a complimentary session to get yourself back on track.

Good Luck!
