October 24th is Take Back Your Time Day.
"If only I had more time, I could accomplish the things I really want to do." Sound familiar? When I talk to my clients, the number one thing they would like more of is – time!
The fact of the
matter is that we all have the same 24 hours every single day. As H. Jackson Brown said, 'You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da
Vinci, Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein'. Does that put it in perspective for you?
The important thing is what we actually do with the time we have. We act as if our days are crammed with things
that have to be done leaving us little time for what's important to us. Yet, when I have clients keep track of their time for one week, it's amazing how much wasted time we find.
I am as guilty of
this as anyone else. There are some days that I have spent the entire day working, yet at the end of the day, very little has been accomplished. When I look back on a day like that, I find that I've spent my time
doing busy work – things that have little relevance to anything important that I'm trying to accomplish.
I can waste an entire morning reading my emails. Although I've gotten really good at handling my
"snail mail" (which I open over the wastebasket saving only the bills), I haven't perfected my "open over the wastebasket" email technique yet.
Another time waster for me is sidetracking myself on the way to
something important. For example, while writing this Ezine, I stopped to watch a snippet of TV that looked interesting, threw in a load of wash, and spent a few minutes playing with the dogs. Not exactly high
priority stuff.
To Take Back Our Time, we need to prioritize. When I tell people that it's not that they don't have time, it's that a task just isn't a high enough priority, I get some angry answers.
But, it's true. If your 24 hours is full and something important to you isn't getting done, it's because the things you are doing have been given a higher priority.
One important thing to consider is WHY
you haven't prioritized an important task. Quite often the answer lies in fear of starting. It might be fear or failure or fear of success – or even fear of what others will say about what it is you're
doing. Overcoming fear is like diving into cold water. The only way to do it is to take a deep breath and jump.
~~~ Weekly Challenge ~~~
Take Back Your Time! For one week, keep track of
how you spend all of your time – even that 5 minutes you spent staring into space should be accounted for.
Look for patterns where you got sidetracked or where you procrastinated. Think about what's going
on in your head during those times. You're not sharing this with anyone else so be honest with yourself about your reasons.
If you need some help Taking Back Your Time, contact me to set up a complimentary
session. Working with someone else is often a huge step toward getting yourself back on track.
Good Luck!
Cindy
